Adolescent Day Hospital

This is a “partial hospitalization” program for adolescents who require intensive, multidisciplinary treatment but do not require hospitalization. Treatment includes intensive group, family and individual therapies. Connections are maintained with the child’s school and other social supports. Hours are 1-5 p.m. weekdays. Families and other members also attend a weekly family support group.
Located at 646 George Street in New Haven, the Adolescent Day Hospital helps the family plan and prepare for discharge by securing ongoing therapy and community services, and also acts as a liaison with the school and other social supports.

This service offers in-home, community-based crisis intervention to children and adolescents, ages 3 to 17, and their families.

Children’s Psychiatric Emergency Services is a 20-bed, brief treatment inpatient unit for children and adolescents from age 2 to 17 (13 for boys), suffering from a variety of psychiatric disorders. Emphasis is on evaluation and stabilization. Treatment consists of intensive individual, family, and group psychotherapy.
Treatment includes:
- Psychiatric evaluation by board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, including medication evaluation
- Each child will be assigned a therapist who will provide individual and family psychotherapy throughout their stay
- 24-hour care by specially trained nurses
- Tutorial instruction provided by a teacher with a master’s degree in special education from ACES (Area Cooperative Educational Services)
- Parent and sibling education programs and support groups
Upon admission, each child receives a physical examination from a pediatrician. A pediatric neurologist is available to perform a neurological assessment as needed.

Adult Partial Hospital

Located at 1294 Chapel St., New Haven, this program provides intensive, outpatient partial hospitalization for people with a variety of diagnoses, five days a week, for four and a half hours a day. The Partial Hospital Program offers three tracks to better serve patients:
- A Mental Health track for patients with psychiatric illness
- A track for patients battling substance abuse
- A “co-occurring track” for those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse issues.
In addition to group therapy, medication management is also provided by our psychiatrists and advance practice registered nurses.

Outpatient therapy and treatment for adults 18 and over suffering from depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, panic disorders, family problems and other psychiatric disorders. Specialized programs are offered in treatment of domestic violence and for patients with mental retardation and mental illness.

1100 Sherman Avenue, Hamden – 2nd Floor
Starting July 5, 2011, the Department of Psychiatry at the Hospital of Saint Raphael expanded its adult outpatient psychiatric services to 1100 Sherman Avenue, Hamden, where it offers its adult Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
PHP/IOP assists individuals struggling with mental health or both mental health and substance abuse disorders who require more intensive services than traditional outpatient treatment. The department also offers services at 1294 Chapel Street in New Haven.
