Trauma Center

The Hospital of Saint Raphael is certified by the state of Connecticut as a Level Two Trauma Center, which means it has the equipment, staff and resources needed to provide high levels of sophisticated trauma care. Typically, of the approximately 48,000 annual visits to our Emergency Department, about 25% are trauma-related.   The trauma team includes experienced, board-certified surgeons, emergency physicians and surgical sub-specialists committed to caring for traumatically injured patients. These include orthopedic, plastic, and neurosurgeons and radiologists-as well as specially trained nurses, anesthesiologists and radiology technicians devoted to all aspects of trauma care.     Members of the trauma team provide immediate care to patients with the most serious injuries, including:

  • Head and neckinjuries from motor vehicle accidents
  • Spinal cordinjuries
  • Third-degree burns
  • Gunshot wounds

State regulations require these types of critically injured patients be taken to a state-designated trauma facility.
