The first of its kind in Connecticut, Smiles to Go! is a mobile dental clinic on wheels that travels to elementary schools and other locations throughout the New Haven area to provide basic dental care to those in need. The 40-foot clinic-on-wheels is staffed by general dentists and hygienists, and features two examination/treatment rooms for basic dental services, including routine cavity repair. The program has also partnered with the Hospital of Saint Raphael’s Family Health Center to offer children dental exams and preventative care as part of their regular well visit at the clinic while educating their parents about the importance of good dental hygiene. Dental exams, fluoride treatments, dental sealants and cleanings, where age-appropriate, are available to children from age one (an initiative advocated by the state of Connecticut) to 6 through the Family Health Center. Studies have shown that good dental care is essential for overall health and well-being. Lack of dental care can lead to other serious health problems.
