Tiedemann awarded for Parkinson’s volunteer work

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — North Haven resident Gladys Tiedemann recently received the prestigious Salvatore Esposito Sr. National Volunteer Award at the American Parkinson’s Disease Association conference in Nashville, Tenn.

Tiedemann, 71, established the Connecticut chapter of the APDA in 1984 and has been its only president. In 1988 she founded the New Haven Parkinson’s Center at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, which offers support groups and a telephone hotline. .

She regularly lectures around the state about the stresses and demands of caring for a person with Parkinson’s and participates in a telephone network that offers support and understanding to Parkinson’s patients and their families. .

She also works at the Parkinson’s Center at least once a week and volunteers twice a month in Saint Raphael’s Pastoral Care department. .
