Pharmacy Residency Programs
Residency Training
The Hospital of Saint Raphael Department of Pharmacy Services offers both an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)-accredited post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency program and an ASHP-accredited post-graduate year 2 (PGY2) specialty residency in health-system pharmacy administration. The PGY2 program is offered in affiliation with Cardinal Health and is a combined program where candidates enroll to obtain a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of Connecticut, School of Business.
Each program is adapted to fit the needs and interests of the residents. Rotations or experiences are typically one-month in duration but may also be concentrated (e.g. 2 weeks) or extended (e.g. 6 – 8 weeks) or longitudinal in nature. Pharmacy residents will provide educational presentations and develop project management skills. Support is provided for residents to present and attend a local, regional, or national meeting.
PGY1 Residency Overview
The post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) program’s purpose/intended outcomes are to develop independent pharmacy practitioners who seek positions in clinical practice in a health-system or positions in specialty training (e.g. post-graduate year 2 residency or fellowship). Following completion of the program, residents will have further expanded knowledge and skills in clinical and management practice as well as strengthened communication and teaching/precepting skills.
Combined PGY2 Residency in Health-System Administration/MBA Program Overview
The post-graduate year 2 (PGY2) program’s purpose/intended outcomes are to provide advanced training to highly motivated individuals who seek leadership positions in an institutional pharmacy practice setting. Following completion of the program, residents will have further expanded upon knowledge and skills in management and leadership principles as well as strengthened communication and teaching/precepting skills, preparing them for future positions in supervisory or management roles.
The resident will matriculate into the University of Connecticut, School of Business, Masters in Business Administration Program as part of the specialty residency. Areas of instruction emphasized in this combined program are management of financial systems and human resources, pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research, and health systems operations and design. Learning experiences are sequenced to coordinate with coursework and are based on resident interest and preceptor availability.
