The Hospital of Saint Raphael has expanded its services to meet the growing need for adult outpatient psychiatric care. Located at Saint Raphael’s Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Services at 1294 Chapel Street in New Haven, the expanded services fill an important niche for patients with a range of conditions that require psychiatric care but not hospitalization.

Partial Hospital Program and Intensive Outpatient Program (PHP/IOP)

As the highest level of care offered outside of inpatient or residential care, the Partial Hospital Program (PHP) at Saint Raphael’s provides daily structure for mental health patients with a variety of diagnoses, five days a week, for four and a half hours a day. A similar program called the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets three times per week, for four and a half hours a day.

The Partial Hospital Program offers three tracks to better serve patients:

  • A mental health track for patients with psychiatric illness
  • A track for patients battling substance abuse
  • A “co-occurring track” for those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse issues.

Both programs offer group-based counseling. Group sessions focus on anger management, social skills, art therapy, psychotherapy and more. The groups are facilitated by master’s degree-level clinicians.  The PHP/IOP program is fully licensed and accepts referrals.

The Continuing Care Clinic (CCC)

Saint Raphael’s also offers a full range of outpatient services in its Continuing Care Clinic. Clients may “step down” from Partial Hospital Program/Intensive Outpatient Program services and attend up to two group therapy sessions per week. A wide variety of weekly groups are also offered, including psychotherapy, psychodrama, art therapy, social skills and others. These groups have varying lengths of stay in order to provide follow-up treatment for long- and short-term needs. Outpatient group treatment for relapse prevention and co-occurring disorders is also available. Group treatment is available by referral, and most insurances/entitlements will cover these services.

Medication management services are available for those referred from other programs and services at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Our psychiatrists and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) follow clients’ psychiatric medication needs in coordination with other hospital treaters, including inpatient Psychiatry, the Partial Hospital Program/Intensive Outpatient Program, the Primary Care Clinic, Haelen Center and other clinics at the Hospital of Saint Raphael.

Continuity of Care

The new programs offer continuity of care across the spectrum of illness for patients with severe psychiatric illness, allowing them to leave the hospital earlier, and have better integration of their care throughout the episode of illness.
