Thoracic Surgeons

John A. Federico, M.D., FRCSC

Dr. Federico is a board-certified general surgeon and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in both general and thoracic surgery.  He is also Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut.

Dr. Federico received his B.S. from Georgetown University College of Arts and Sciences, and his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine.  He did a general surgery residency and served as chief resident at Maine Medical Center.  Afterward, he served as senior registrar in thoracic surgery at Trenchay Hospital, Bristol England.  He then completed his training at the University of Ottawa where he was a senior resident in cardiac surgery, and chief resident in thoracic surgery.

Dr. Federico is an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the Yale School of Medicine.  He joined the staff of Saint Raphael’s and Yale New Haven Hospital in 1994. You may contact him at 203-787-3488.

Mario W. Katigbak M.D.

Dr. Katigbak is a board-certified thoracic surgeon, and the director of thoracic oncology at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut.

He completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of the Philippines where he was an Oblation Scholar, and graduated with distinction.  He did his internship in general surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, before finishing as chief resident at the Maimonides Medical Center.  He was the recipient of several awards during his training, and was honored as the most outstanding resident during graduation.  He then went on to complete his caridothoracic surgical training at the Yale-New Haven Hospital of the Yale School of Medicine.

Dr. Katigbak’s expertise extends into minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant disease.  This includes video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomies, minimally invasive esophagectomies and endoscopic interventions. You may contact him at 203-787-3488.

 

Richard P. Salzano, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Salzano is section chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael and is board-certified in general, cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Dr. Salzano graduated summa cum laude from Yale University, earning a bachelor of science degree with distinction in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York. He completed a thoracic surgery resident at Rochester and general surgery residencies at Hartford Hospital, where he also earned awards and served as chief resident. He performs video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS) as well as more traditional procedures and surgeries, such as bronchoscopies, lung resections and lobectomies for both benign illnesses and malignancies.  You may contact him at 203-562-2257.
