Nearly 5 million Americans have congestive heart failure. For some, it can be a very debilitating condition, affecting their quality of life and leaving them unable to perform daily activities. But with more than 400,000 new cases diagnosed each year and a baby boomer population that’s getting older, unfortunately, congestive heart failure is a chronic health problem that will only get worse.

That’s why the Hospital of Saint Raphael has opened a new Refractory Heart Center. The program is the only one in the area offering comprehensive, long-term services, as well as participating in groundbreaking research studies, to patients suffering from advanced heart failure.

Located at the hospital, the center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team specially trained in heart failure, including nurse coordinators, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pharmacists, nutritionists and home healthcare professionals. The center will conduct clinical research, offering drug therapies on a clinical trial basis, and offer a comprehensive range of innovative health care disciplines – from diagnosis to home care. These include cardiopulmonary stress evaluation, inpatient education, diet/weight and exercise management, as well as new and emerging treatments and surgical options. Outpatient follow-up completes the continuum of care.
