February 11, 2009 – Saint Raphael’s names new spine center director
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has appointed Anne R. Moore, B.S.N., M.S.N., M.S., to the position of director of the hospital’s Spine Program. Moore was most recently the manager of the Orthopedic/Neurosurgical Unit at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn., as well as an adjunct faculty member at Saint Vincent’s College. February 5, 2009 – Saint Raphael’s ranked among top 100 places for nurses to work
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has been ranked among the top 100 hospital workplaces in the nation for nurses. Nursing Professionals, a new publication for nurses, named Saint Raphael’s as one of only two Connecticut hospitals on its list of America’s “Top 100 Hospitals to Work For.” Full Story
February 2, 2009 – Saint Raphael’s named one of the safest hospitals in the country
As reported in FORBES magazine, the Hospital of Saint Raphael was among those designated as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by HealthGrades, a hospital rating company. February 1, 2009 – Saint Raphael’s flu specialist offers tips on flu prevention
Diane Dumigan, Saint Raphael’s flu specialist and infection preventionist, appeared on WTNH-Channel 8’s “Good Morning Connecticut” to remind people it’s never too late to get a flu shot. Even though flu season is well underway, vaccination, thorough hand washing, and using alcohol-based hand rubs are good preventative methods to help people avoid the disease. January 13, 2009 – Saint Raphael’s appoints new chairman of psychiatry
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has appointed Marshal Mandelkern, M.D., to the position of chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, effective February 9, 2009. As chairman of the Psychiatry Department, Dr. Mandelkern will oversee Saint Raphael’s inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services for adults and children, along with substance abuse services. A New Haven resident for more than 30 years, Dr. Mandelkern joined the Saint Raphael’s medical staff in 1995, serving since 1998 as the medical director of inpatient and day hospital services and the adult outpatient psychiatric service. He earned both an M.D. and Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University.
January 2, 2009 – Saint Raphael’s appoints trustees to SRHS, Foundation boards
Saint Raphael’s has appointed five new trustees — one to the Saint Raphael Healthcare System Board and four to the Saint Raphael Foundation Board. Full Story
November 27, 2008 – Saint Raphael’s first in region to use hypothermia technique to preserve brain function
When Marc Medina of Milford went into cardiac arrest, he was transferred to the Hospital of Saint Raphael, where doctors reduced his body temperature to preserve his brain function. Dr. Roger Elias, director of Saint Raphael’s Medical Intensive Care Unit, literally put Medina’s body on ice to avert brain damage making Saint Raphael’s the first hospital in the area to successfully launch a therapeutic hypothermia protocol. October 30, 2008 – American Cancer Society partners with Saint Raphael’s on cancer services
Representatives from the American Cancer Society and the Hospital of Saint Raphael have signed a collaboration agreement to work together on a number of key initiatives, including promotion of the Society’s free cancer information services and support programs for cancer patients and their families, cancer education and prevention programs, and advocacy and outreach efforts throughout the community. October 28, 2008 – Saint Raphael’s launches assessment clinic for people with Down syndrome
Saint Raphael’s senior assessment clinic began dedicating the fourth Tuesday of each month to assisting people with Down syndrome and their families. Saint Raphael’s Geriatrics Section Chief Gerard Kerins, M.D., who has been treating older patients with Down Syndrome for more than a decade is leading the assessments. Among a variety of geriatric concerns, recent research shows that people with Down syndrome often develop Alzheimer’s disease at an earlier age, Kerins said. Full Story

October 21, 2008 – Mammograms for the uninsured can save lives through early detection
Many women forgo screening for breast cancer because they are uninsured or under-insured and simply can’t afford it. Saint Raphael’s offers free mammograms through a state-funded outreach program in conjunction with the hospital’s Women’s Center for Breast Health. Medical Oncologist Dr. Andrea Silber recently set up an informational booth at the Salvation Army thrift shop in Hamden to share information about the program and encourage women not to let anything, even tough economic times, stand in the way of their healthcare.
October 3, 2008 – Thoracic surgeons perform lung surgery over live broadcast
Thoracic surgeons Dr. Alicia McKelvey and Dr. John Federico of the Hospital of Saint Raphael performed lung surgery during a live broadcast to more than 20 thoracic surgeons on Friday, October 3. The event was part of the thoracic surgery department’s educational initiative to help surgeons around the country learn more about the latest techniques in thoracic surgery. September 28, 2008 – “Lights for Life” raises nearly 30k for Saint Raphael’s Hamden Satellite Cancer Center
Local businesses and the Hamden High School cheerleaders banded together and raised nearly $30,000 to benefit Saint Raphael’s Hamden Satellite Cancer Center. The group sold luminarias that were lit in tribute to cancer survivors and their families during an event on September 28th. Read the Background Story
September 12, 2008 – Saint Raphael Surgeon First To Offer Plaque-Busting Vascular Procedure
Dr. Antoine Ferneini, a vascular surgeon at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, is the first physician in Connecticut to offer an innovative treatment to people suffering a life-threatening condition where plaque builds inside blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the legs and arms. Using an orbital atherectomy system, Dr. Ferneini can remove calcium plaque blockages and restore blood flow to a patient’s legs. Full Story
September 9, 2008 – Branford Road Race To Benefit Saint Raphael’s McGivney Center
The 6th Annual Branford Shores Fall Classic – Sara’s Run Through Indian Neck – will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19. Proceeds benefit the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care in memory of Sara Forbes, a life-time resident of Branford, avid runner and former cancer patient at the McGivney Center. Full Story
September 4, 2008 – New Simulation Lab Lets Physicians Practice in a Lab Setting
A ribbon-cutton ceremony opened the Hospital of Saint Raphael’s new medical education simulation lab on September 4. Using virtual computer-based and reality-based simulations in the lab, residents can develop skills they need to perform innovate procedures before they take part in actual surgeries. Previously, surgeons trained by watching cases before progressing to working with patients. Full Story
August 25, 2008 – Hospital Hosts Symposium for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Men in Greater New Haven who want to learn more about the latest in prostate cancer treatment will have the chance to ask medical experts about the disease at an upcoming prostate cancer symposium at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. “Treatment of Prostate Cancer in the New Millenium: Advances in Technology,” will be Thursday, Sept. 25 in the hospital’s Cronin Auditorium.
