June 29, 2012 – Hospital of Saint Raphael awarded an “A” grade in safety
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has earned an “A” grade in safety from the Leapfrog Group, an organization that analyzes data on 26 separate healthcare quality measures. Saint Raphael’s was the only hospital in New Haven and one of only four in the state to earn an “A” grade. Full Story

June 15, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s-based nutrition program helps families afford healthy foods
Connecticut women who meet income guidelines and need help providing their children with nutrient-rich foods can turn to the Hospital of Saint Raphael and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Saint Raphael’s coordinates the New Haven WIC Program, which consists of four full-time WIC offices: at Saint Raphael’s, Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Hill Health Center and the Fair Haven Community Health Center. There are also satellite offices in Branford, Hamden, Milford and West Haven. Full Story

June 1, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s Cancer Center one of two in nation to win oncology group honor
The Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care at the Hospital of Saint Raphael was one of only two cancer centers in the nation honored recently with a 2011 Certificate of Excellence by the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, whose Quality Assurance Program focuses on procedures relating to clinical trials. The McGivney Center was recognized for having zero deficiencies in their last two audits (audits happen every three years). Full Story

May 9, 2012 -Saint Raphael’s Breast Center earns re-accreditation
The Women’s Center for Breast Health at the Hospital of Saint Raphael has earned its second three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.  Full Story  

May 8, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s Spine Center earns top designation in three surgeries
Saint Raphael’s Spine Center has been designated a Center of Excellence for Spine Surgery by the Joint Commission, an organization that accredits over 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Saint Raphael’s certification as a “Gold Seal” center from the Joint Commission makes it the only program in Connecticut to earn the designation in three types of surgery. Full Story

May 7, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s hosts Breast Health Screening Day on May 31
The Hospital of Saint Raphael Women’s Center for Breast Health is hosting a Breast Health Screening Day on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Women who qualify for the Connecticut Early Detection Program are eligible for free services. Full Story

May 4, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s Looking Forward Fashion Show showcases local models
“Models for the day” from across the region will take to the catwalk on June 4 for the 16th Looking Forward Fashion Show, a fundraiser for support programs for patients at Saint Raphael’s Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care. Full Story

April 25, 2012 – Connecticut Knights of Columbus honor Saint Raphael’s physician and benefactor

Hospital of Saint Raphael physician and benefactor Romeo A. Vidone, M.D., has been honored by the Connecticut State Council of the Knights of Columbus. Dr. Vidone was presented with the council’s 37th Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney Award on March 25, 2012, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. Full Story

April 24, 2012 – Saint Raphael Foundation to raffle off $48,000 in Visa gift cards

April 12 , 2012 – Saint Raphael’s speakers to offer advice on stress and health
Women on the verge due to economic stress and health concerns are invited to a special event on May 10 at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Two expert speakers will offer concrete tips and inspiration to help women manage stress and prioritize at the event, sponsored by the Saint Raphael’s Women’s Center for Breast Health and Department of Women’s and Children’s Services. April 10, 2012 – Hospital of Saint Raphael honors volunteers from across the region
For National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, the Hospital of Saint Raphael would like to thank and honor our many hundreds of volunteers for their gifts of compassion and time. Volunteers this year represent the following towns and cities: New Haven, Hamden, North Haven, West Haven, East Haven, Northford, Madison, Orange, Branford, Guilford, North Branford, Ansonia, Wallingford, Cheshire, Huntington, Derby, Somers, Killingworth and Westport. April 3, 2012 – Hospital of Saint Raphael sponsors spring educational events
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is offering a range of educational events in New Haven and surrounding communities this spring, including a spine pain lecture, a Women’s Center for Breast Health event, coupon workshop, stroke awareness day and spine surgery lecture. Full Story

March 28, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s enters flu season with record rate of employee vaccination
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has entered the flu season with more than 96 percent of employees opting to get influenza vaccinations. The high rate of participation, a record for the hospital, is a result of an intensive campaign to promote vaccination as a way to protect patients and staff from influenza. Full Story

March 20, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s physician wins American Psychiatric Association award
The American Psychiatric Association has honored Hospital of Saint Raphael physician Theodore Zanker, M.D., with the 2012 Bruno Lima Award in recognition for his work on disaster preparedness. Zanker serves as chairperson of the Connecticut State Medical Society (CSMS) Committee on Statewide Disaster Preparedness, where he works with community physicians on their response to possible emergencies like epidemics, storms and power outages. March 15, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s to offer cardiology services in Hamden at 2080 Whitney Avenue
The Hospital of Saint Raphael’s nationally recognized Cardiology department will offer a range of new heart health services at 2080 Whitney Avenue in Hamden starting on Monday, March 19, 2012. Services will include general cardiovascular care along with echocardiography, vascular ultrasound, stress testing and nuclear cardiology. Hours at the new Hamden offices are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Full Story

March 5, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s specialist to discuss sleep apnea
A sleep specialist will discuss the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Dr. Roger Elias, a pulmonologist and director of Saint Raphael’s Sleep Health Program, will speak on the topic, “Up all night: How to get a better night’s sleep,” as part of Saint Raphael’s CareCard program for older adults. The lecture is free and open to the public and parking will be validated. Registration is required; call the Healthy Aging Line at 203.789.3275. Full Story

February 16, 2012 – Guilford students donate more than 1,000 items of clothing to Saint Raphael’s pediatric programs
Students at Guilford’s Baldwin Middle School have donated more than 1,000 items of winter clothing to the Hospital of Saint Raphael’s Pediatric Primary Care Center and Children’s Psychiatric Emergency Services. Full Story

January 30, 2012 – Babies, moms and state DPH chief to celebrate Saint Raphael Birth Center’s birthday
A bevy of moms, babies and VIPs will celebrate the first birthday of the Dr. Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center at the Hospital of Saint Raphael on Friday, Feb. 10. Connecticut Department of Public Health Commissioner Jewel Mullen, M.D., is scheduled to attend the event, which also marks the Vidone Center’s designation as Baby-Friendly for promotion of breast feeding. Full Story

January 26, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s offers free workshop for couples considering weight-loss surgery
The Hospital of Saint Raphael Center for Weight-Loss Surgery is launching a new outreach effort for couples and family members who are considering obesity treatment together. The hospital will host a special workshop on family weight-loss surgery on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 5:15 p.m. in Saint Raphael’s Cronin Auditorium, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven. January 20, 2012 – Saint Raphael’s McGivney Cancer Center expands wellness offerings
The Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care at the Hospital of Saint Raphael is launching several new wellness efforts, including Medical Pilates for cancer patients, in-bed yoga, holistic nutrition and live music for patients and their loved ones in the center’s lobby. Full Story

January 18, 2012 –Saint Raphael’s Auxiliary seeks healthcare scholarship applicants
The Auxiliary of the Hospital of Saint Raphael is now accepting applications for its four annual scholarships. New Haven County high school seniors and undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in a health-related field are eligible for the awards, in the amount of $1,000 each. Full Story


January 13, 2012 – Geriatrician: Injuries from falling are a serious problem seniors can avoid
Each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older suffers from a fall.  Winter weather increases the risk of falling, especially outdoors. We see evidence of this at the Hospital of Saint Raphael regularly. Fortunately, there are simple steps older adults can take to reduce their risk of falling and protect their independence.

January 6, 2012 – “Beatlemania” themed Crystal Ball gala benefits Saint Raphael’s
“Beatlemania” was the theme at this year’s Hospital of Saint Raphael Crystal Ball, which raised over $88,000 to benefit the hospital and its programs. This year’s event, held on Nov. 19, 2011, was chaired by David Fusco, president and CEO of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut, the Presenting Sponsor. Full Story

January 5, 2012 – Sons of Italy raise funds for Saint Raphael’s Breast Center
The Sons of Italy in America Greater New Haven Lodge No. 37 has donated $1,300 from a fundraiser to the Women’s Center for Breast Health at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. The funds, raised at a Lodge luncheon Nov. 20 at the Branford Italian American Club, will be used to help patients in need. Lodge members plan to make the fundraiser an annual event. Full Story

December 13, 2011 -Hospital of Saint Raphael inaugurates new da Vinci robotic surgery system
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has acquired a new da Vinci robotic surgery system to meet the needs of the hospital’s growing Robotic Surgery program. Saint Raphael’s new da Vinci Si HD system is among the most advanced in the state and will break new ground in the use of robotics for colorectal, urological, gynecological and thoracic procedures. December 5, 2011 – Saint Raphael’s Auxiliary presents its annual gift to benefit hospital programs
The Hospital of Saint Raphael all-volunteer Auxiliary has presented the hospital with its 2011 gift, a check for $171,800. The Auxiliary raises money each year through special events like its annual golf tournament and sales at the Glass Door Gift Shop and Saint Raphael’s Thrift Store, both located on the hospital campus. December 5, 2011 – Saint Raphael’s physician presented with teaching award
Ernest Moritz, M.D., associate chairman of Medicine at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, has received the George F. Thornton Teaching Award from the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Physicians. The award was presented last month at the chapter’s Annual Scientific Session. Full Story

November 30, 2011 – Hospital of Saint Raphael first in the area to offer at-home sleep testing
A new high-tech belt is helping Hospital of Saint Raphael specialists diagnose patients with sleep problems, with testing taking place in the comfort of a patient’s own bed. Patients who suspect they may have conditions like sleep apnea – a potentially life-threatening disorder that can lead to heart attack or stroke – can enroll in the home studies through Saint Raphael’s Sleep Health Program. November 29, 2011 – Hospital of Saint Raphael and Cigna sign new contract
The Hospital of Saint Raphael and Cigna announced today that they have signed a new contract to replace the agreement that expired on Oct. 19, 2011. The new agreement allows Cigna customers to receive services at The Hospital of Saint Raphael at in-network benefit levels. Full Story

November 15, 2011 – Saint Raphael’s Stroke Center earns award from Stroke Association
The Hospital of Saint Raphael Stroke Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Silver Plus “Get with the Guidelines” Stroke Quality Achievement Award. The award honors success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted guidelines. Full Story

November 8, 2011 – Saint Raphael’s earns county’s first ‘Baby-Friendly’ designation for promoting breastfeeding, mother-child bonding
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is the first hospital in New Haven County and just the fourth in the state to be designated “Baby-Friendly” by an international program to promote breast-feeding and mother-child bonding. The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund named Saint Raphael’s as a Baby-Friendly Hospital this month under an initiative to recognize hospitals and birth centers that help parents make informed choices about feeding and caring for their babies.
