The Saint Raphael Healthcare System (SRHS) is an integrated delivery system providing a complete spectrum of care: wellness and health promotion activities, acute care, long-term care and home care. Among the entities of the System are the Hospital of Saint Raphael; 125-bed Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Health Center (a skilled nursing facility); the Saint Raphael Foundation (fosters philanthropic support for the System’s not-for-profit affiliates); Xavier Services Corporation; and joint ventures to operate MRI and dialysis centers). The Hospital of Saint Raphael, founded in 1907 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth and a group of local physicians, is the oldest and largest member of the System. The Hospital is a 511-bed acute care community teaching hospital affiliated with Yale School of Medicine. It is known for its exceptional, sophisticated care, provided in an environment that respects the dignity of each person. In collaboration with its medical staff, the Hospital provides a comprehensive array of services, excellence in Heart and Vascular Services, Bone and Joint Services, Cancer Services, Neuroscience Services, Senior Services, Obesity Services, Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry, Women’s and Children’s Services and Surgery. It is also a Level II trauma facility. The quality of its care has been recognized by several independent organizations. As a result, it is the hospital in this region most often chosen by adults for their inpatient surgery and by seniors for all inpatient services. Saint Raphael’s care goes beyond its walls, offering innovative, community-based, outreach and wellness-related programs such as the Hamden Campus of the McGivney Cancer Center, worksite occupational health programs, and a suburban preadmission testing and blood drawing station. For patients without transportation, Saint Raphael’s has developed nationally recognized Project MotherCare, prenatal and primary care clinics located at various community sites; Smiles to Go, a mobile dental clinic; and the ElderCare Clinic, providing basic health care to seniors living at community sites in New Haven, West Haven and Hamden. Health promotion is very important to Saint Raphael’s. Two of its key programs are CareCard, a free health, education and fitness membership program for adults 55 and older, and Better Health magazine, a bimonthly publication providing health and wellness information to 140,000 households throughout Greater New Haven.
