Chairman, Department of Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Medicine.  Our extraordinary team of caregivers – from physicians to technologists and nurses – offer a full spectrum of internal medicine and specialty care.  They have the experience, skills and access to advanced technology to diagnose and treat you.  All provided with the compassion for which Saint Raphael’s is known.

Like other clinical areas at Saint Raphael’s, we are committed to provide exceptional patient-centered care.  We believe strongly that the best care is personal —  individually tailored plans to address the specific needs of each person. We monitor and measure our clinical outcomes to ensure we provide the highest quality care, and we have a strong commitment to patient safety.  We have a comprehensive array of inpatient and outpatient (ambulatory) services, and our clinicians collaborate with specialists from other disciplines, such as Surgery, Psychiatry, Gynecology, and Radiology.

Our comprehensive services include programs to prevent disease, diagnose and treat it, provide rehabilitation, and help manage chronic conditions.  Our advanced heart care is a great example, with a broad spectrum of services that include catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories, nursing units with specially trained staff dedicated to heart care, inpatient and outpatient care for congestive heart failure and heart disease, and the renowned TakeHeart cardiac    rehabilitation and life-planning program.  Another example is our geriatrics program, which includes a senior assessment clinic, geriatric inpatient unit, and community-based health and wellness programs.

Care in all these specialties is provided by community-based physicians in private practice; on-site hospitalists who care for inpatients at the direction of their personal physicians; and post-graduate interns, residents and fellows.  Saint Raphael’s is a teaching hospital that attracts some of the best young doctors from around the country and the world.

Saint Raphael’s is your community teaching hospital with a 100-plus year record of caring and commitment to this community. The Department of Medicine is an important part of that commitment, with more than 14,000 patient admissions and nearly 20,000 outpatient visits each year.   The more you learn about our department, the more you will know it’s the best place for community-centered care in the greater New Haven region.  It would be a privilege to care for you or your loved ones.
