Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Phone: (203) 789-3383
With a highly trained and specialized staff, the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) delivers advanced care for premature babies (born as early as the 28 week of pregnancy) and those who are ill and need specialized care. The NICU team includes two full-time neonatologists, several neonatal physician assistants and neonatal nurse practitioners.
The team also works with respiratory therapists, case managers, pharmacists, social workers, lactation consultants and pediatric specialists to provide the very best care for your baby.
Our Patients
Most babies admitted to the NICU are premature (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy), have low birth weight less than 5.5 pounds, or have a medical condition that requires special care. Premature infants often suffer from respiratory problems. Twins, triplets and other multiples are admitted to the NICU, as they tend to be born early and smaller. Babies with medical conditions such as heart problems, infections and birth defects, and jaundice problems are also cared for in the NICU.
Parent and Family Involvement
The NICU practices family-centered care. This concept places parents on the same team as the neonatologist, nurses, therapists and other support members. The NICU staff encourages parents to be involved in each step and we offer rooming in for the newborn. Parents and grandparents have 24-hour access to their baby.
