Donating your own blood
Blood transfusions have never been safer. New techniques, knowledge and tests make your risk of infection from transfusion extremely low.
Although the risks of complications from transfusions are low, your own blood is safest for you. That’s why Saint Raphael’s recommends you donate your own blood prior to elective surgery, a procedure known as autologous donation. There may, however, be reasons why you may not be able to donate your own blood. Or, you may choose not to.
While there are some risks to receiving donor blood, the Hospital of Saint Raphael, the American Red Cross and others employ sophisticated scientific know-how to make blood transfusions as safe as possible.
