In 2005, Saint Raphael’s Hospital opened a Maternal/Fetal Medicine Unit offering a variety of prenatal diagnostic tests and services to ensure both mother and baby receive proper care during pregnancy.
The unit is located in the Private Building on the sixth floor of the hospital, and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team specializing in obstetrical ultrasounds and fetal assessment. The unit is equipped with a state-of-the-art 3D ultrasound machine with color Doppler. Saint Raphael and community physicians may refer patients to the unit.
Our Services
- Non-stress test: This test is preformed to detect fetal distress. Some of the most common indications for performing this test are decreased fetal movement, post date patients and for diabetic moms.
- Level II ultrasound or targeted ultrasound: This ultrasound allows a more detailed evaluation of the fetus, showing any structural/anatomic abnormalities. This scan can also assess blood flow to the baby’s heart and brain.
- Biophysical profile (BPP): A non-invasive test indicating the presence or absence of fetal asphyxia and, ultimately, risk of death in the antenatal fetal period.
- Amniocentesis: Can show chromosomal abnormalities, certain structural problems, Rh incompatibility and other conditions.
- Genetic Counseling: A specially trained medical staff member can discuss with potential parents their chances of having a child with a genetic disorder or birth defect, as well as testing and treatment options.
- First trimester screening: This screening allows us to assess the risk of fetal abnormalities.
