WIC is a federally funded program that
nourishes more than 11,000 women, 15,000 infants and 33,000 children each
day in Connecticut. The programs goals are to prevent health problems and
improve nutrition.
WIC provides vouchers for specific foods--milk, cheeses, eggs, fruit
juice, dried beans and peas, peanut butter, and iron fortified cereal and
infant formula. Eligible participants enroll in the program at their local
WIC office, like the one at Saint Raphael's, which serves more than 2,500
clients in Greater New Haven.
WIC does more than just supply nutritious foods. It also provides
individual counseling and group classes. Mothers learn about good
nutrition during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, and throughout early
childhood. They also learn about the dangers of substance abuse and the
importance of health care and immunizations.
