This education
is an interfaith professional opportunity that brings you
into the lives of people in crisis, while providing you with
supervision. This intensive involvement with peers and teachers
helps you to develop a greater understanding of the needs
of patients and their families. In the process of helping
others, you will develop and improve your interpersonal and
professional relationship skills. You will also learn
how to conduct an effective ministry.
The
hospital and ministry
Saint Raphael's is a 511-bed academic health science center affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine. Our program
offers pastoral care experience in the areas of cardiac surgery,
cardiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gerontology,
HIV/AIDS, obstetrics, oncology, psychiatry and rehabilitation.
We also minister to outpatients and in off-site clinical services.
Program
work requirements
Residents are considered integral members of the Pastoral
Care department and work a five-day week, including some 24-hour
on-call days. (Ordinarily, there are four on-call experiences
per month, including at least one Saturday and one Sunday.)
Additionally, there are weekly education activities, including
at least one hour of individual supervision, one didactic
seminar, two pastoral care seminars, two covenant group sessions
and one theological reflection or discussion seminar.
Prerequisites
In candidates, we look for an ability to form and learn from
pastoral relationships. Residency applicants need to have completed at least
the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree. We usually prefer that applicants
have one previous unit of clinical pastoral education. The
application fee is $25 (non-refundable). Tuition is $125 per
unit, due at the beginning of each unit.
Faculty
The Reverend Steven Voytovich, D. Min., is the Manager
of the Clinical Pastoral Education Residency program. The
faculty consists of members of our Pastoral Care department
as well as specialists from inside and outside the hospital.
(Specialists are experts on topics discussed at our didactic
presentations. These topics can be medical, psychological
or pastoral in content.)
Our program
has an interfaith focus. The current members of our faculty
are from various faith groups, including Catholic, Episcopalian,
Jewish, United Church of Christ and Orthodox Christian. We also
depend on the ministry of internal and external adjuncts representing
many different faiths.

- A one-year
stipend of $24,700;
- Full
medical and dental benefits (some resident contribution
is required; available from first day of residency);
- Eleven
paid holidays;and
- Ten
