The treatment of bones and joints has advanced dramatically, and the Hospital of Saint Raphael has not only kept pace with new advances, it’s long been a leader.
More patients come to Saint Raphael’s than any other hospital in Connecticut to have bilateral joint replacement—replacing either both knees or hips at the same time.
Our expert orthopedic surgeons also perform more single joint replacements — including knee and hip surgeries, as well as joint replacements for shoulder, ankle, hand and wrist — than any other hospital in the region. And now, they are doing this amazing work at Saint Raphael’s new Bone and Joint Center – part of an $11 million newly constructed wing of the hospital.
New Unit
Opened in July 2007, the 16,000-square-foot Bone and Joint Center – now located on the hospital's Verdi 3 South floor — was specially designed to meet the growing demand for joint replacements and the specific needs of orthopedic patients. The 24-bed, dedicated orthopedic unit is staffed by experienced clinicians who coordinate the full scope of services patients need to prepare for, undergo and recover from joint replacement surgery, and includes:
• eight private rooms and eight semi-private rooms, each
spacious
and equipped with larger, handicapped accessible toilets
• a large satellite gym featuring new exercise equipment for
physical therapy
• a state-of-the-art conference room/classroom for patients
and staff
• two nutritional stations for patient use
• a larger family waiting area
“The new Bone and Joint Center is an enormous benefit to patients,” said Saint Raphael Orthopedics Section Chief Enzo Sella, M.D. “It is staffed by a team of doctors, nurses and other caregivers devoted to the care and needs of orthopedic patients. This includes attention not only to clinical needs, but to pain management, nutritional needs, and the emotional trauma caused by surgery. Everything a patient needs is located in one place. The result is improved continuity of care and clinical outcomes.”
“Each time orthopedics has advanced, so has Saint Raphael’s,” said Bone and Joint Center Medical Director Kevin Lynch, M.D. “We’re committed to staying at the forefront of technology and bringing our patients the experience, compassion and comprehensive care they’ve come to expect from Saint Raphael’s – in a top notch facility like the new Bone and Joint Center.”
