Radiation
Radiation therapy treatments last approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Your treatments
will be scheduled for the same time every day, Monday through Friday. The average
treatment series lasts six weeks, although your treatment could last anywhere from
one day to eight weeks. You will also see your radiation oncologist on a weekly
basis.
When you return to the McGivney Center for
treatments, you will:
- Check in with the receptionist at the front desk.
- Go to the changing area and wait for a radiation therapist to take you
to the treatment room.
- Go to the treatment room for your treatment session.
- Once a week, your radiation oncologist will review your treatment and
the side effects you may be experiencing. If at any other time, you wish
to speak to your physician, there is always one available.
- To reach the McGivney Center Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30
p.m., call (203) 789-3131; to reach medical staff after hours, call (203) 789-3000.
- During treatment, blood work will often be required, as specified by
your radiation oncologist.
- Weekly X-rays are taken to verify positioning of the radiation beam.
(This is an important quality assurance procedure that ensures the proper
alignment of the radiation beam. It does not give us information regarding
the status of the disease.)
Once your treatment series is complete, you will continue to come to the
McGivney Center for follow-up care.
