Benefits to stereotactic radiosurgery
|
There
are many benefits to stereotactic radiosurgery over more invasive
traditional methods, such as open craniotomy (surgically opening
the skull). It:
- Is less invasive.
- Requires less recovery time.
- Is performed under local anesthesia only.
- May not require a hospital stay.
- Holds fewer risks.
- Offers a very low risk of post-operative complications and permanent deficits from an acute neurological event, such as a stroke.
- Is safer than invasive surgery when the lesion is located in or near critical brain structures, such as an optic nerve or primary motor area.
- Causes minimal or no hair loss and may avoid scarring.
- Is less costly for the patient.
- Enhances survival and minimizes side effects when used in addition to craniotomy.
