The simulation is a plan for the best way to treat you using
radiation therapy. Your radiation oncologist, a radiation
therapist and a dosimetrist (a specialist in determining and
measuring exact amounts of radiation) will work together to
design your course of treatment.
The McGivney Center recently acquired a new state-of-the-art
AcQsim CT simulator. The new simulator offers simultaneous CT
capability and traditional simulation to create 3D images of
tumors and surrounding tissues, enabling radiation oncologists
to precisely locate treatment areas for high-dose radiation therapy.
The new simulator will reduce procedure time in half.
Your simulation appointment will last approximately 1 hour. If you
bring a family member or friend with you, they may wait in our
comfortable reception area, where we provide coffee, reading material,
snacks and more.
When you arrive at the McGivney Center for your simulation appointment,
you will:
- Check in with the receptionist at the front desk.
- Be escorted to a changing area, where you will wait for the radiation
therapist to take you to the simulation room.
- Go to the simulation room, where marks will be placed on you that will
be used to set up your daily treatment. Your radiation oncologist will
explain to you what is being done throughout the process, and you are
encouraged to ask questions.
- Make an appointment to begin your treatment series.
Between your simulation appointment and the day your treatment begins,
your radiation oncologist will work with the dosimetrist to design the
exact treatment plan to be used. They will perform calculations and use
sophisticated modeling software to determine how the radiation beams will
be arranged to destroy the cancer while at the same time sparing the healthy
tissues surrounding the tumor.
