Your consultation appointment

We would like you to be as comfortable as possible during your visits to the McGivney Center. Here is what to expect during your consultation appointment:

The cancer center has its own private parking lot directly in front of the center's main entrance. See more detailed directions for reaching our private George Street parking lot. We suggest that you use this lot, rather than the George Street or Orchard Street parking garages, for several reasons: The parking lot is for cancer patients ONLY, it is free, it provides you with a very short walk directly into the McGivney Center, and there is always someone available to assist you with getting to and from your car.

Once you have parked, go first to the reception desk, where you will be greeted by one of our administrative assistants .

You will be taken to a private registration area in the McGivney Center lobby, where you will be registered and your radiation therapy chart will be created. Please have the following information with you: your address, name of referring physician, insurance information, telephone numbers and referral authorization (if you are a member of an HMO). This process takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

A radiation oncology nurse will meet with you to create a medical history. The nurses will also assist you in understanding and managing any possible side effects if you and your physician decide that treatment is necessary.

A radiation oncologist (a cancer specialist who integrates radiation into your treatment plan) will meet with you to conduct an examination. The radiation oncologist will then discuss oncology care with you. If radiation therapy is part of your treatment plan, he or she will also discuss radiation therapy treatment and side effects. You are welcome to have family members or loved ones present for this discussion.

If the radiation oncologist and you agree that you will undergo radiation therapy, an appointment for a simulation session will be made for you. (A simulation session is a marking process that establishes exactly where on your body the radiation will be directed.)

Between your first visit and your simulation appointment, your radiation oncologist will review your case and any X-rays and tests that you may have had. These will assist in designing your radiation therapy simulation and treatment.
