The volume study is performed in the McGivney Center
and lasts about one hour.
An ultrasound probe is used to take pictures of your
prostate in five-millimeter slices. The position of the
urethra, the tube that carries the urine through the prostate,
will also be identified by inserting a small amount of lidocaine
jelly into the urethra. This procedure may be done under sedation,
but sedation is unnecessary for most patients.
The ultrasound and other information obtained during the volume study
are entered into an advanced computer planning system, which creates a
map of your prostate to help determine proper seed placement during
implantation. Your
radiation oncologist supervises this process and will give final approval of
the treatment plan.
