Saint Raphael's state-of-the-art, two-step prostate cancer treatment
uses improved ultrasound technology and advanced radiation therapy
to more powerfully and precisely attack tumors - while reducing the
risk of injury to nearby healthy tissue.
The technique involves two procedures. The first, called SonArray,
utilizes ultrasound technology to help clinicians identify the exact
location of the prostate, which each day can slightly shift in the body.
Once an exact location and 3-D image of the prostate are found and displayed
on a computer screen, a cutting-edge form of radiation -- intensity modulated
radiation therapy or IMRT -- is applied.
IMRT allows doctors to attack all parts of irregularly shaped tumors from multiple
angles, without harming nearby healthy tissue.
Ultrasound-IMRT is an outpatient procedure performed in Saint Raphael's
Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care
Each session takes about 30 minutes. The number of sessions is determined on a
case-by-case basis, though most prostate patients receive about 45.
