If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, you have already
seen several physicians and specialists. The first signs were probably
detected by an internist. You may have visited a urologist, who performed
a biopsy, diagnosed your condition and discussed surgical treatment options.
You may have been referred to a radiation oncologist to explore even more
treatment options. A first step in doing this is to come to the McGivney
Center for an initial consultation.
The purpose of an initial consultation is to gather and review information
about your general health, medical history and other information related to
your diagnosis. The process takes about 2 –1/2hours. During this time, you
will meet with:
- A medical secretary, who will ask for personal and insurance information
and help you understand the reimbursement process.
- A radiation oncology nurse, who will obtain a medical history and provide
an overview of side effects related to radiation therapy.
- A radiation oncologist, who will review your medical history, perform a
physical examination, and discuss in detail the prognostic factors,
your treatment options,
and the side effects and complications associated with each option.
