This is a typical schedule for a patient undergoing radiosurgery:
10:00 a.m.
When you arrive at the McGivney Center, you will be escorted to the radiosurgery waiting area.
10:30 a.m.
Your neurosurgeon and radiation oncologist will place the stereotactic headframe on you, while you are under local anesthesia.
11:00 a.m.
A CT scan will be taken while you are wearing the headframe.
11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Your radiosurgery team will plan your treatment and assure the quality of the treatment plan. The team will analyze the CT scan, MRI scan and other studies and then will generate a customized stereotactic plan. While this is being done, you and your family will remain in our radiosurgery waiting room, which is equipped with a television and VCR. We will also provide you with lunch.
3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Once your treatment team has completed the treatment planning and quality assurance process, your treatment session will begin. A treatment session is usually about 30 to 60 minutes, although some cases can take a little longer.
4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Once your treatment session is over, your treatment team will remove the headframe and discuss follow-up care with you. Most patients can go home immediately.
