Predictable RN to patient ratios

In late 2001, Saint Raphael’s became the first

Connecticut hospital to use a new model for staff scheduling, and patient placement, that creates predictable nurse to patient ratios and workloads.

The model bases scheduling on a targeted daily census and an agreed-upon RN to patient ratio. For example: If the target is 25 patients and the nurse to patient ratio1 to 5, five nurses are scheduled and

each cares for no more than five patients. Staffing units to the targeted census, and changing how and where patients are placed – plus the sequence of placement -- makes care delivery more predictable and allows more nurses to be at the bedside.
