| Saint
Raphael's offers a wide range of clinical areas for residents
to explore and experience.
Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology covers all phases of general,
regional and local anesthesia for all types of surgical and
obstetrical cases. The department is also involved in the evaluation
and treatment of chronic pain.
Department mortality and morbidity meetings are held monthly.
Residents have access to the department's library, which includes
current texts, slides, cassettes, visual aids and national and
international journals focusing on anesthesiology and related
sciences. In addition, the department sponsors a monthly series
of presentations by nationally known speakers in the field of
anesthesiology.
Dermatology
Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery provide a wide range of
services to both inpatients and outpatients at the Hospital
of Saint Raphael. Consultative services are available to hospital
inpatients as well as residents of Saint Regis Health Center,
the hospital's 125-bed skilled nursing facility. The hospital
clinic has more than 1,000 visits annually from patients throughout
New Haven County.
Teaching conferences will provide you with a comprehensive overview
of dermatology. Specialty services offered include pediatric
dermatology, phototherapy, patch testing, and laser surgery.
Internal medicine residents may choose an elective in dermatology,
which includes the above experiences as well as a rotation in
a busy private dermatology practice. In the private practice,
you will spend two to four weeks seeing patients with the attending
physician, participating in conferences and consulting on hospitalized
patients.
Emergency
Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine forms an important bridge
between the community and the Hospital of Saint Raphael. A
Level 2, state certified trauma center, the department recently
was renovated and expanded to provide the most sophisticated
treatments and now includes a fast-track treatment area for
less emergent cases.
The Hospital's mission of providing access to health care
begins in this department. Under the supervision of the Emergency
Medicine faculty, interns and residents from medicine evaluate
and treat patients with a wide variety of illnesses and injuries.
Over 48,000 patients visit the department each year, and more
than 11,000 are admitted to the hospital. More than 45 percent
of all patients admitted begin their care in the Emergency
Department.
Saint Raphael recently opened The Heart Emergency Center. Under the auspices of the Emergency Department, it will identify patients with cardiac issues to streamline their diagnostic testing and, if needed, their hospital admission. The center's the new center, will be staffed with Cardiology P.A.s/A.P.R.N.s, emergency medicine and cardiac R.N.s, and ED physicians. In addition, cardiologists will have a strong presence in the center.
The Heart Emergency Center will offer bedside troponin and BNP. Troponin is a rapid test to determine myocardial damage and BNP helps differentiate congestive heart failure from other heart conditions.
The center will also have two beds dedicated to extremely acute patients, equipped with ventilators and intraortic balloon pumps. All beds will have invasive monitoring units with central unit at the center's nurses' station.
The center will offer three care options. A patient may be evaluated and discharged; evaluated and observed, with pre-discharge testing (e.g., stress test); and evaluated and admitted as an inpatient.
Pathology
Residents learn to appreciate the complexities of pathology
by working closely with Saint Raphael pathologists. An understanding
of the pathologist's contribution to patient care, as well
as the specific acquisition of skills and knowledge, are gained
through individual instruction and numerous clinical conferences.
The Hospital of Saint Raphael's laboratories are well equipped,
largely automated and have ample capabilities for methodology
evaluation, developing new procedures and quality assurance
studies. Major procedures in all divisions of surgery and
medical specialties make for an unusually fine source of material
in surgical pathology.
Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry provides comprehensive and integrated
mental health treatment featuring a private practice model
for patient care. Services include emergency, day hospital,
outpatient, evening chemical dependence treatment and inpatient
care. Child and adolescent inpatient day hospital and crisis/emergency
needs are also met. Medical/surgical inpatients at the Hospital
of Saint Raphael are served by the psychiatric consultation
service. Twenty-four hour emergency psychiatric services are
available in Saint Raphael's Emergency Department.
Residents participate in teaching activities, including intake
conferences, clinical conferences, lectures, seminars, and
bimonthly Grand Rounds. A variety of students have participated
in the program, including residents, interns, medical students,
Ph.D. and MSW students and pediatric residents.
