The Hospital of Saint Raphael offers a two-year, post-doctoral fellowship in Nephrology
leading to board certification. The fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education. Up to two fellows are accepted annually after completion
of a three-year Internal Medicine residency.
Fellows participate in a very active consultation service, where they have the opportunity
to evaluate and manage patients with a vast array of renal syndromes. These include acute
and chronic renal failure, acid-base and electrolyte disorders, hypertension, glomerular
disease and disorders of mineral metabolism. Fellows will gain expertise in all areas of
renal replacement therapy. In the critical care setting, continuous venovenous hemofiltration
(CVVH) and slow low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) are available for training and treatment purposes.
Nephrology fellows also help supervise the care of patients with end-stage renal disease in
state-of-the-art hemodialysis and chronic peritoneal dialysis units. Fellows have ample
opportunity to acquire expertise in all nephrologic procedures.
Fellows actively participate in outpatient evaluation of patients with proteinuria, hematuria,
hypertension and chronic kidney disease in a supervised weekly clinic setting. Transplantation
training rotations occur in cooperation with the transplant program at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
In addition, they will gain clinical experience in the long-term follow-up of transplant
recipients in the ambulatory setting by attending a weekly transplant clinic during eight
months of their fellowship. Nephrology fellows are expected to participate in the planning and
execution of a clinical research project under faculty guidance.
The program consists of a large clinically experienced and academically oriented teaching
faculty that is dedicated to its joint missions of patient care and to teaching. The fellowship
has a rich conference schedule that includes a weekly clinical conference, a monthly journal club,
and a research and renal pathology conference. Fellows are also expected to participate in the
teaching of medical housestaff.
