Sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth
The Hospital of Saint Raphael offers a two-year, post-doctoral
fellowship in nephrology leading to board certification. The
fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME). Up to two fellows are accepted annually
after completion of a three-year residency in internal medicine.
Fellows participate in a very active consultation service evaluating
and treating patients with acute and chronic renal failure,
acid-base and electrolyte disorders and hypertension, as well
as disorders of mineral metabolism. Nephrology fellows also
help supervise the care of patients with end-stage renal disease
in state-of-the-art hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal
dialysis units. Fellows have ample opportunity to acquire expertise
in all nephrologic procedures.
Multiple teaching conferences include a monthly renal biopsy
conference and clinical journal club. Fellows participate actively
in outpatient evaluation of patients with proteinuria, hematuria
and renal failure in a supervised clinic setting. Transplantation
training rotations are in cooperation with the transplant program
at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
During the second year, nephrology fellows are expected to pursue
a clinical research project under faculty guidance and can instruct
on the inpatient nephrology unit.
