Some women decide to stay with their batterers, either because
they are afraid to leave or because they have an opportunity
to work toward a healthier relationship with their partner.
If you decide you must stay with your abusive partner, please
stay alert and follow these safety guidelines to protect yourself
during a violent episode:
- Avoid
the kitchen, bathroom or other places where there are weapons
and no exits.
- Make
yourself a small target dive into a corner, curl
into a ball and protect your head.
- Always
have a phone close by.
- Consider
giving your batterer what he wants just to keep yourself
safe.
- Trust
your instincts leaving a batterer can be a dangerous
time.
- Call
911.
- Call
the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE
(7233) or the Connecticut Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-888-774-2900.
