Are you a man who has been abusive to your partner? Domestic
violence can take many forms: threats, insults, forceful restraint,
sexual coercion, slapping, pushing, punching and even
murder. As bad as it is for your partner to go through, your
abusive behavior has serious consequences for you, too. It
causes:
- A bitter,
fearful, emotional climate in your home.
- Growing
isolation and possible divorce or separation.
- Damage
to your children's well-being.
- Feelings
of shame, worthlessness and depression.
- Risk
of arrest and imprisonment.
- Loss
of others' respect for you.
The Men's
Group offers support and confidential group therapy to men
who want to end their violence toward women. It can help you
through:
- Education:
You will talk with other men who have similar problems
so that you can begin to understand and accept yourself
and others. You may eventually bring this openness and trust
to your family relationships as well.
- Self-help:
You'll increase your self-awareness and confidence as well
as learn how to communicate your feelings and needs more
effectively. You'll also learn how to recognize your own
danger signs of increasing anger and how to control that
anger before you lash out.
- Therapy:
You'll talk about conflict in your relationships and explore
other ways to respond to those conflicts. You'll also discover
how to deal with hurt and frustration in ways that improve
both your relationships and your self-esteem.
The group
is led by professional therapists who protect your confidentiality
and safety. The goals of the group include helping you learn
ways to:
- Increase
your self-control in difficult situations.
- Identify,
contain and express your feelings.
- Increase
your awareness of the danger of violence.
- See
things from your partner's point of view.
- Reduce
your stress and manage your anger.
- Eliminate
your unreasonable mistrust, suspicion and jealousy.
- Develop
nonviolent ways to communicate and be assertive.
- Decrease
your isolation.
- Assess
your use of alcohol and drugs.
