In response to a dramatic community need, Saint Raphael's has expanded the inpatient CPES program to 20 beds. A long-time leader in both adult and adolescent psychiatry, Saint Raphael's is one of just five hospitals in Connecticut that offers inpatient mental health services to school-aged children and it's the only hospital in Connecticut treating children below the age of 5 years old.

Specific services include:

• Highly structured environment
• ER consultation
• Treatment for depression, post-trauma, ADHD, eating disorders, substance abuse, autism and other conditions
• 24-Hour care by specially trained nurses
• Psychiatric evaluation by board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists
• Parent and sibling education
• Individual and family therapy
• Group therapy
• Psycho-educational Groups (information on diagnosis, treatment, medication, dispositions)
• Tutorial program
• Behavior management using a token economy system

Interdisciplinary team approach

CPES uses an interdisciplinary approach to treating mental illness in children and adolescents. Specialists work together to plan treatment methods, monitor effectiveness and evaluate progress.

This team approach with low staff to patient ratios of 1:4 for social workers, 1:3 for nurses and 1:6 for psychiatrists. This means your physicians, nurses, therapists and others involved with the care of your child are together under one roof, which improves interaction and exchange of information. The team also coordinates care with the outpatient therapist for intake, discharge, and aftercare plans. The result is better patient care and treatment.

Accreditation information

SRHS is a JCAHO-accredited child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient facility. Saint Raphael's has been re-certified since the expansion of the CPES unit.
