A new, non-surgical procedure to help shrink fibroid tumors is now available at Saint Raphael's. The procedure eliminates the need for surgery either to remove the fibroid tumors from the uterus, or to remove the uterus itself. Most patients who undergo the procedure are released from the hospital in 24 hours. During the procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia while the patient is awake, tiny bead-like particles are used to block the blood flow to the fibroid tumors. This causes the tumors to shrink over time, while the uterus is unharmed. Most women experience a 25 to 50 percent reduction in fibroid size and volume within six months.
