Tom Murtagh
Tom first discovered the field of radiation therapy when his father was successfully treated with radiation therapy. Tom enrolled in the Hartford Hospital School of Allied Health and went on to join Saint Raphael's radiation oncology team. Ten years later, Tom is still helping patients at the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care.
"I came to Saint Raphael's so I could work with the latest in technologically advanced equipment," Tom says. "When I came here 10 years ago, we used more generalized therapies; now we use advanced machines and planning procedures that give us pinpoint accuracy and prevent damage to the surrounding tissues."
"It's not just the new technology that keeps me happy at Saint Raphael's, it's the food," Tom confesses with wink. "Patients are always bring in snacks for us and with our diverse patient base, we eat everything from gourmet chocolates and cookies to ethnic favorites like lasagna, beans and rice, bagels, ribs, fried chicken."
Tom explains, "at Saint Raphael's we treat the whole patient, body, mind, spirit. We're invested and patients can tell. Patients want to show us they care about us too, and feeding us is often how they show it."
