Teresa Bowman
The ability to stay up-to-date on the latest equipment and techniques keeps radiation therapist Teresa Boman excited about coming to work each day. Shortly after earning her associate's degree in radiation technology at Gateway Technical Community College, she joined the Saint Raphael's staff; "I felt like a member of the team the day I was hired. I really enjoy working with a group of dedicated, hardworking therapists, doctors, nurses, dosimetrists, and physicians."
"Things have changed dramatically in the 14 years I've been here. We're always learning about the best and newest in radiation treatments. With the modern equipment, there are comparatively far fewer side effects."
Like many radiation therapists, Teresa is constantly seeking to improve her skills and learn more about how to best help her patients. She took advantage of Saint Raphael's tuition reimbursement program and earned her bachelor's degree in diagnostic imaging at nearby Quinnipiac University.
Sometimes the benefits of being a radiation therapist fall a little outside the job description. During radiation sessions, patients and therapists often chat; it makes patient's feel more comfortable and passes the time.
"One day I was talking about my love life and my patient said she knew 'the perfect guy' for me. Who would have thought that years later, she'd be fully recovered and that 'the perfect guy'--now known as my wonderful husband-- and I would be expecting our second child?!"
