Meet Wendy Pesticci,Nuclear Medicine technologist
Wendy Pesticci was thinking about a different career when she got a look at nuclear medicine.
As a teen-ager, I had helped my grandmother a lot while she had cancer, so I wanted to become a radiation therapist, Wendy says.
But the radiation therapy program she wanted to attend was full, so Wendy decided to wait a year. In the meantime, she looked into other programs. When she saw what nuclear medicine technologists do, she was fascinated.
After earning her associate’s degree in nuclear medicine three years ago, Wendy came to Saint Raphael’s.
I did my clinical rotation here as a student and really liked it, she says. It’s a nice, supportive environment, and Saint Raphael’s is known for its patient care.
In addition to scanning patients with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, Wendy also does blood work in the lab, draws up doses of radiopharmaceuticals and schedules patients.
I like the diversity of the job; you never get bored, she says. No two days are the same.
The job can be a challenge, particularly when working with patients whose conditions make it difficult to get a high-quality scan. But knowing you play a significant role in their diagnosis and care is rewarding, Wendy says.
I love working with the patients, she says. They’re my favorite part of the job.
