Nuclear medicine:
a career commitment

What do Nuclear Medicine technologists do?
As member of the Radiology team, Nuclear Medicine technologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and care of patients. They administer radioactive drugs (radiopharmaceuticals) to patients, then operate special cameras that detect and map the drugs in the body to create an image on film or computer. Protective gear and strict safety procedures greatly minimize the risk of radiation exposure to technologists and patients.

Requirements
Technologists are active, spending a lot of time on their feet and lifting or turning patients. They generally work a 40-hour week that may include evenings or weekend emergency calls. Opportunities for full- and part-time work are available at Saint Raphael’s, and we’ll work with technologists to try to accommodate their schedules. Education and training programs range from one to four years and lead to a certificate, associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
