September 1, 2010 - Saint Raphael Healthcare System names new care management medical director
The Saint Raphael Healthcare System has appointed Lawrence Magras, M.D., to the post of medical director for the Care Management Department. In his new role, Dr. Magras will be the hospital's physician leader in the areas of utilization review, quality management, discharge planning and related policy and practice initiatives. Full Story
August 27, 2010 - Saint Raphael's to host prostate screening, symposium on prostate cancer
The Hospital of Saint Raphael invites men in the Greater New Haven area who are age 50 and over and not currently under the care of a urologist to a free prostate screening on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, as part of the Project Brotherhood outreach program. The screening will take place at Saint Raphael's Father Michael J. McGivney Cancer Center. Full Story
August 25, 2010 - Second annual classic car show to benefit Saint Raphael's Cancer Center
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is proud to present the 2nd annual "Cruise Against Cancer" car show to benefit the Looking Forward program at the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care. The show, featuring 200 antique, classic and muscle cars, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010. Full Story
August 16, 2010 - Second annual Bruce's Ride cancer fundraiser
The second-annual Bruce's Ride cycling fundraiser has been scheduled for Sunday, October 3, 2010, at the Owenego Beach and Tennis Club in Branford. This year's event will benefit the Hospital of Saint Raphael's Looking Forward program of support and wellness for cancer patients and their loved ones. Full Story
August 13, 2010 - Saint Raphael's CareCard program hosts talks on aging issues
The Hospital of Saint Raphael's CareCard program for those 55-plus is hosting a series of talks at the hospital this fall on issues of interest to older adults and their caregivers. Topics include health-care advocacy, caregiving and advance directives. A free memory screening is also scheduled. Full Story
July 30, 2010 - Saint Raphael's-based nutrition program helps families afford healthy foods
Connecticut women who meet income guidelines and need help providing their children with nutrient-rich foods can turn to the Hospital of Saint Raphael and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Saint Raphael's coordinates the New Haven WIC Program, which consists of 4 full-time WIC offices. Full Story
July 29, 2010 - Saint Raphael's cancer center to open new ACS resource center
The Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care at the Hospital of Saint Raphael is scheduled to formally open a new American Cancer Society (ACS) Resource Center at its main New Haven campus with an open house from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Aug. 12, 2010. Full Story
July 8, 2010 - International group honors Saint Raphael's weight loss center nurse/coordinator
Jessie M. Moore, A.P.R.N., coordinator for the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, has been awarded the Circle of Excellence for 2010 by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. This honor recognizes Moore's leadership efforts in promoting a high level of care for bariatric surgery patients nationwide as well as activities to support research and education for patients in Connecticut at Saint Raphael's Weight Loss Surgery program. June 10, 2010 - Oncology Nursing Society gives top honor to Saint Raphael's nurse practitioner
Vanna M. Dest, A.P.R.N., an oncology nurse practitioner at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, has been named the 2010 recipient of the Oncology Nursing Society Excellence in Radiation Therapy Nursing Award. This award recognizes her as an expert nurse in the field of radiation oncology who has made significant contributions to the field through outstanding patient care. Full Story
June 9, 2010 - Saint Raphael's auxiliary awards 2010 scholarships
The Auxiliary of the Hospital of Saint Raphael has awarded its 2010 scholarships to three local students who are pursuing careers in the health professions. Each student was presented with a $1,000 award at a dinner May 25 at the Race Brook Country Club in Orange. Full Story
June 9, 2010 - Saint Raphael Healthcare System names new chief medical information officer
The Saint Raphael Healthcare System has appointed Prem Thomas, M.D., to the post of Chief Medical Information Officer. In his new role, Dr. Thomas will use and adapt information technology tools to facilitate medical practice and improve care. Full Story
June 9, 2010 - Saint Raphael's sponsors talk on women's spine health in Shelton
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is sponsoring a free lecture on women's spine health in Shelton on Wednesday, June 30, at 6 p.m. Women of all ages are at risk for osteoporosis and fractures but some lifestyle changes can help preserve spine health, according to speaker Judith Gorelick, M.D., a Saint Raphael neurosurgeon who specializes in spinal degenerative disorders. May 28, 2010 - Saint Raphael's cardiologists hold Heart Expo for students in Guilford
Cardiologists and other experts from the Hospital of Saint Raphael gave students at Guilford's Adams Middle School a hands-on lesson in the structure and function of the heart at the hospital's Heart Health Expo on May 7. Full Story
May 12, 2010 - Saint Raphael's hosts event for Stroke Awareness Month
The Hospital of Saint Raphael will host a Stroke Awareness Day event in the hospital cafeteria at 1450 Chapel St. in New Haven from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 14, as part of a nationwide effort to educate people about the warning signs of stroke. Full Story
May 5, 2010 - Saint Raphael's offers Philips Lifeline with AutoAlert
The Hospital of Saint Raphael's is pleased to offer Phillips Lifeline with AutoAlert, a new medical alert device that detects falls and automatically calls for help when a user cannot press the alert button. The new device detected 95 percent of many types of falls in a company study and had a low rate of false alarms. Full Story
May 5, 2010 - Sister Ann Matthew honored at Saint Raphael's president's ball
The Hospital of Saint Raphael honored donors and the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth at the 2010 President's Ball on April 10. More than 200 people attended the 20th event, held annually to recognize the members of the Saint Raphael Society, Presidents' Circle, Society of Mother Mary Xavier and Sister Louise Anthony Legacy Society. April 29, 2010 - Saint Raphael's hosts spine symposium with national experts

April 21, 2010 - Saint Raphael Foundation to raffle off $48,000 in Visa Gift Cards
For its annual raffle, the Saint Raphael Foundation this year is offering $48,000 in Visa Gift Cards - prepaid cards that can be used anywhere debit cards are accepted. A total of 1,500 raffle tickets are available at a cost of $125 each, entitling the ticket holder and one guest to attend a cocktail party and drawing at Anthony's Ocean View in New Haven on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Full Story
April 12, 2010 - Saint Raphael's Event to Help Women Make Choices About Mammograms
The Women's Center for Breast Health at the Hospital of Saint Raphael is hosting an event on April 29 to help women evaluate recent recommendations on breast-cancer screening. This free event - entitled "Do I Really Need a Mammogram?" - will feature presentations by a breast-imaging specialist, a breast cancer surgeon and an obstetrician/gynecologist. Full Story
April 8, 2010 - New stroke protocol at Saint Raphael's extends time for brain-saving
A new stroke treatment protocol at the Hospital of Saint Raphael is offering some patients a wider window of time to benefit from a brain-saving drug. The new protocol extends the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to up to 4.5 hours after the first symptoms of an ischemic (clot-caused) stroke. Full Story
April 7, 2010 - Brownie troop delivers cookies to Saint Raphael's Hamden Cancer center
Hamden Brownie Troup No. 60869 has donated more than 50 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to patients and staff at the Hospital of Saint Raphael's Father Michael J. McGivney Cancer Center - Hamden Campus. The cookies were collected as part of the troop's annual Gift of Caring effort to promote community service and were delivered on March 26. Full Story
April 5, 2010 - Saint Raphael's offers first public screening for head and neck cancers
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is hosting its first screening for head and neck cancers to raise awareness about the diseases, which are the sixth most common kind of cancer in the United States. The screening will be held 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14 at the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care. Full Story
March 25, 2010 - Saint Raphael's dental van celebrates its 10th anniversary
Smiles to Go, the Hospital of Saint Raphael dental van, is celebrating its 10th year of service with help from the People's United Community Foundation. The foundation donated $25,000 for 2010 operations of the van, which provides dental care at a reduced cost for underserved children and adults. Full Story

March 10, 2010 - Saint Raphael's CareCard launches new fitness programs in Hamden

March 9, 2010 - Saint Raphael's names new director of thoracic oncology
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has named Mario W. Katigbak, M.D., a specialist in lung cancer and minimally invasive surgery, as director of Thoracic Oncology. Dr. Katigbak specializes in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant diseases of the thoracic cavity, including esophagectomies, endoscopic interventions and VATS lobectomy, a cutting-edge surgery for early stage lung cancer that uses video technology. March 4, 2010 - Saint Raphael's names new stroke program coordinator
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has announced that Anne Froehlich, R.N., has been named coordinator of the Saint Raphael Stroke Center Program. Froehlich will manage the program as the hospital seeks designation as a Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission, an independent health-care accrediting organization. Full Story
February 25, 2010 - Saint Raphael's cancer center wins top-level accreditation
The American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer has granted three-year accreditation with
commendation to the Hospital of Saint Raphael. The recognition is the highest level of accreditation available to a teaching hospital cancer program and renews Saint Raphael's rating until 2012. Full Story
February 11, 2010 - Saint Raphael's auxiliary seeks scholarship applicants
The Auxiliary of the Hospital of Saint Raphael is now accepting applications for its three annual scholarships. All high school seniors and undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in a health-related field are eligible for the awards, in the amount of $1,000 each. Full Story

January 28, 2010 - Saint Raphael's names new director of customer service & guest relations
Kim Richard, R.N., B.S.N., has been named director of Customer Service & Guest Relations for the Saint Raphael Healthcare System. In this role, she will be responsible for developing, implementing and leading Saint Raphael's patient-satisfaction and customer-service strategies. Full Story
January 25, 2010 - Crystal Ball in Branford Raises Funds for Saint Raphael's
The Saint Raphael Foundation's annual Crystal Ball benefit has raised more than $70,000 for patient care at the Hospital of Saint Raphael and the Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Health Center. The event, held at Woodwinds in Branford in December, was co-chaired by Ellen Aversa and Sunny Jean Luciani of Woodbridge. Full Story
January 22, 2010 - Saint Raphael's sponsors talks on spine health
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has announced a new lecture series on spine health. The series covers topics like advances in spine surgery, the latest in pain management and new treatments for spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause leg, groin and back pain. January 15, 2010 - Sen. Dodd Speaks on Healthcare Reform at the Hospital of Saint Raphael
Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) visited the Hospital of Saint Raphael Monday to speak to employees about healthcare issues and the reform bill passed by the Senate on Christmas Eve. If the bill, entitled the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, becomes law, it would extend health coverage to 31 million people who are currently uninsured and add new insurance regulations and Medicare benefits.
