Dr. Denise Barajas, Director of the Women's Center for Breast Health at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, explains what accreditation means for the center and its patients.

The Women's Center for Breast Health at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven:
- Offers a team approach to breast cancer by working with the patient and her physician to offer highly skilled specialists across a range of disciplines, including surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pathology, radiology (breast imaging), genetic screening, counseling and support services, integrative medicine and wellness programs
- Uses pioneering technology like conventional and digital mammography, computer-assisted detection of breast cancer, ultrasound-guided biopsy, advanced radiation therapy, MammoSite technology
- Offers a "patient navigator,"* whose job is to take patients through the process of making appointments, receiving a diagnosis, receiving a treatment plan and deciding about wellness options and also informs patients about our free services
- Provides nutritional consultation, gentle yoga and wellness retreats
- Has the Looking Forward Specialty Shop that offers products --like head wraps and wigs -- and services that address the body image changes experienced during breast cancer treatment
- Offers access to a wide range of psychosocial support, financial assistance, and case management provided by the Looking Forward support and education program. Support services are provided by a licensed professional counselor, a master's prepared social worker, and registered nurses
- Conducts "Living with Breast Cancer," a series of breast cancer lectures
- Provides access to social services and help with transportation, financial and insurance issues
- Received certification by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, established to identify comprehensive breast centers, and ensure quality care
*Funding for the patient navigator provided through a Susan G. Komen for the Cure-CT Affiliate Grant
