Pharmacy Training

Program for Doctor of Pharmacy Students

Advanced clinical rotations with a strong emphasis on incorporating evidence-based medicine are major focus areas for doctor of pharmacy students at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Doctor of pharmacy candidates gain experience in rational drug therapy and cost-effective drug selection, therapeutic monitoring parameters, pharmacokinetic principles, adverse event avoidance, drug information, and verbal and written communication.

Pharmacy Internship
Eligible pharmacy students who meet the Connecticut Pharmacy Commission requirements may apply to work as pharmacy interns, gaining valuable “on-the-job” experience under a registered pharmacist’s supervision. Students will be exposed to a broad range of distributive and clinical functions performed by pharmacy personnel. Students will learn about the medication delivery system, develop skills in intravenous admixture and compounding dosage forms, gain experience in drug information and educational programs, and have the opportunity to attend pharmacy meetings, seminars or clinical conferences, in addition to other activities. Students are hired as pharmacy technicians and most often work during summer and winter school breaks. Occasionally, some students volunteer in the department.

The value of a pharmacy practice residency

"It is a year to bridge the gap between student and practicing pharmacist." "It is an opportunity to gain experience and to further build upon clinical, management, and practice skills, enabling a graduate student to transition with confidence and capability to a practitioner position or into specialized training."

"The value is the increased ability to recruit future skilled pharmacists and contribute to the advancement of pharmacy as a profession. Practitioners may find it advantageous to come to a site with an established training program as they see it as a commitment to continuous professional development."

"The residency offers experiences not only in traditional hospital practice and in expanding ambulatory experiences but also a unique business perspective as part of the Cardinal Health Pharmacy Management division."
